Question 1

What network infrastructure does a retail store need?

Accepted Answer

A typical retail store needs: a managed switch (8–24 port PoE+) for the back office/server room, a business-grade firewall/router (Fortinet, Cisco Meraki, or Ubiquiti EdgeRouter), 1–3 enterprise WiFi 6 access points for staff and guest coverage, structured Cat6A cabling to all POS terminals and AP locations, and a UPS in the server room for critical equipment protection. POS terminals should be on a dedicated VLAN isolated from guest WiFi.

Question 2

Do retail POS systems require a dedicated VLAN?

Accepted Answer

Yes — PCI-DSS compliance (required for any business accepting card payments) mandates that cardholder data environments (CDE) be segmented from other network traffic. This means your POS terminals, card readers, and payment processing servers must be on a dedicated VLAN with firewall rules preventing access from guest WiFi, employee personal devices, and surveillance cameras. Failure to segment properly is one of the most common PCI audit failures.

Question 3

How much bandwidth does a retail store need?

Accepted Answer

A single-location retail store with 3–5 POS terminals, security cameras, and staff/guest WiFi typically needs 100–300 Mbps symmetrical internet. Multi-site retail with cloud POS (Square, Toast, Lightspeed) needs reliable uptime more than raw speed — SD-WAN with dual-WAN failover is recommended so a single ISP outage does not take the store offline. Guest WiFi bandwidth should be throttled (typically 10–20 Mbps per device) to prevent impact on POS traffic.

Question 4

What cabling is needed for retail POS deployment?

Accepted Answer

Each POS terminal location needs a minimum of 2 Cat6A drops: one for the POS terminal, one for the card reader or barcode scanner. Add 1 Cat6A drop per IP camera mounting location, and 1 drop per AP location. Run cabling in conduit where possible for easy future replacement. All drops should terminate to a patch panel in the back office/server room for clean cable management.
